Building a niche review site that earns affiliate commissions
Helpful buying guides that earn a commission when readers purchase

The idea
You build a focused website that helps people choose products in one niche – e.g. home-office gear, aquarium equipment or beginner woodworking tools – with honest comparisons and how-to guides. When a reader clicks your tracked link and buys, the retailer pays you a commission. Once articles rank, they can keep earning with only periodic updates.
Why it works
- Commission rates are public: Amazon Associates (US) pays fixed rates by category, e.g. 4.5% for physical books, kitchen and automotive, 3% for home, tools, toys and pets, 4% for “all other categories”.
- Buyers searching “best X for Y” are close to purchase, so helpful pages convert better than general content.
- One article can earn from many products and many retailers; the site is an asset you own.
- Costs are low: a static site or basic hosting plus a domain.
First steps
- Pick a niche where you can test or deeply research products, avoiding health, supplements, gambling and finance-advice niches.
- Map 30 reader questions (“best X under $100”, “X vs Y”, “how to choose X”).
- Publish 10 genuinely useful articles, then apply to Amazon Associates and niche brand programs.
Key sources
- Amazon Associates commission income statement
- Amazon Associates program policies
- Amazon Associates application review (3 qualifying sales)
